Why emeralds always have inclusions
Emeralds form in a fractured environment, so the jardin — a network of natural inclusions — appears in almost every stone. A flawless saturated emerald is so rare that its price rivals a diamond of the same weight.
Inclusions are not a defect: they confirm natural origin. What matters is whether the fissures reach the surface or run to the girdle where the setting grips the stone.
Oiling and care
About 95% of emeralds worldwide are oiled or resin-filled, which fills microfissures and evens out the colour. The practice is acceptable when the degree is disclosed, and we always state it in the report.
An oiled emerald must not be cleaned with ultrasound or steam, washed in hot water or stored near solvents. Warm water with mild soap is enough; the oiling can be refreshed in our workshop every few years.
